ArcGIS Field Maps and Projections Lab

ArcGIS Field Maps and Projections Lab

For this weeks Lab assignments we were tasked with created a map displaying the safety features of our town or city. In order to accomplish this we had to explore the functionality of both ArcGIS Pro and Arc GIS Online to Create Domains, Feature Classes and Web Maps in order to gather location data with ArcGIS Field Maps and display our public safety information.

Student Learning Outcomes:
▪ Create an empty Feature Class
▪ Share a feature class as a web layer
▪ Collect Data using ArcGIS Field Maps
▪ Create a map package
▪ Troubleshoot map package errors
▪ Share a map package, an ArcGIS Online Map, and a KML Google Map via the web

I chose to document the location and condition of several Fire Hydrants in my community which i later displayed on a Google Earth Map as seen below.

This lab highlighted the versatility of ArcGIS as well as how these applications may be used by emergency services. Here is a link to my full Map displayed on ArcGIS Online

For the second half of this weeks lab assignment we were tasked with creating several different projections for the state of Florida in order to compare and contrast how each Projection would impact the Area of several counties which we later displayed side by side with their associated area calculations in order to demonstrate how different projection settings and calibrations will result in slight distortions and relevant mathematical differences.

Student Learning Outcomes:
▪ Utilize the Project and Project Raster tools in ArcGIS to re-project data to a common Projected
Coordinate System
▪ Recognize .prj files as projection information associated with GIS data files
▪ Work with data being displayed in multiple map views in ArcGIS Pro
▪ Quantify the difference in area (square miles) between data being displayed between three different
projected coordinate systems
▪ Create a map displaying multiple map views.
